William Ellsworth Robinson, known professionally as Chung Ling Soo, was a prominent American magician who achieved international fame by posing as a "Chinese" conjurer. After working for years as an assistant and performer under his own name, he adopted the stage persona of "Chung Ling Soo" in 1900 to capitalize on the Western fascination with Asian mysteries and compete with genuine Chinese magicians. He maintained the illusion so thoroughly that he wore full makeup in public, rarely speaking English, relying instead on a "translator" during interviews. His career came to a tragic and sudden end in 1918 when he was accidentally shot and killed on stage at the Wood Green Empire in London during his famous Bullet Catch illusion. You can purchase a great biography of Chung Ling Soo from MagicTricks.com (see below).
