WHY AM I SEEING THIS POPUP MESSAGE?
You will see this notice pop up on your screen occasionally when you visit MagicTricks.com.
It's your consent to the use of "cookies" under the new Consumer Data Protection Act.
And websites are now required BY LAW to display this popup.
BUT I CONSENTED ALREADY. WHY AM I SEEING THIS POPUP MESSAGE AGAIN?
If you have cleared your browser cache since the last ime you visited MagicTricks.com, you may see this popup again.
"Cookies" are stored in your browser, and clearing the cache clears out the cookies.
The site will look for the cookies, and if they are gone, the popup will ask you to allow the cookies again.
WHAT ARE "COOKIES?"
"Cookies" are basically bits of data that are created by a web server
when you are browsing a site, and those bits are stored on your computer.
"Cookies" allow you to save items in a shopping cart, access your account information on a website, autofill a form, or easily return to a previously viewed page or product.
You can read about "cookies" in depth on Wikipedia HERE.
WHAT IS THE NEW CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT?
Recent laws such as Virginia's Consumer Data Protection Act have created specific guidelines as to how the data can be collected,
how it can be stored, and how it can be deleted by the consumer.
The Consumer Data Protection Act got its start in Europe as the General Protection Data Regulation (GDPR), passed in 2016.
California enacted its own California Consumer Privacy Act in 2018.
Virginia's Consumer Data Protection Act became effective as of January 1, 2023.
Other states, and countries, are following quickly.
ANY WEBSITE that has customers in California, Virginia, or the European Union is REQUIRED BY LAW to display this popup.
Similar laws will go into effect in January 2025 in Maryland, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Vermont, and January 2026 in Kentucky.
WHAT DOES THE PROTECTION ACT REQUIRE?
Currently, if a website does business with customers in California, Virginia or the European Union,
the website must obtain opt-in consent to collect or process such data.
To start processing personal data, businesses must obtain consent via “a clear affirmative act signifying a consumer's freely given, specific, informed, and unambiguous agreement.”
That agreement is the blue popup that you see on your screen.
When this notice pops up on the lower right corner of your screen on MagicTricks.com, you will see a button that allows you to click "Accept" in order to affirm that you understand and agree
that using our site means that we collect information using "cookies.
Because computer browsers delete cookies at certain time intervals or under certain conditions, you may occasionally need to accept the agreement again if your browser has dropped the necessary cookies.
That's why you may see the popup again, even if you have AGREED previously.
It's not MagicTricks.com doing that- it's the way browsers and cookies work!
Yes, website popups can be a bit annoying.
But they are a necessary evil, especially this one.
It lets you know that we are following the law and are
gathering information only under the strict guidelines
of the Consumer Data Protection Act.
