SUBCONSCIOUS SIGNAL is an effect that I developed over the past 40 years.
Many versions of the routine were tried out on my magic shop customers over the years.
And my customers always begged me to teach the trick.

The routine itself runs 10 to 15 minutes.

Professional poker players know the value of a good "poker face".
That's the ability to control your eyes, your facial expressions, your body movements so that you don't subconsciously telegraph your secrets to others.
With SUBCONSCIOUS SIGNAL, it's like you are able to read these signals THREE TIMES during the effect!

This wonderful trick can be performed closeup, or even on a stage.
The routine is a whole act by itself!

As you see Peter do in the demo, you allow your spectator to FREELY CUT THE DECK to select a card at random.
He keeps the portion of the deck he's cut to, and the rest of the deck is set to the side.
He secretly peeks at the chosen card, then shuffles the portion of the deck he's holding.
Then you instruct him to lay the cards in rows, face up, on the table.
He can make as many rows as he want.
He can put as many or as few cards in any row he wants. He can even go back and add cards to previous rows.
It is truly his free choice!

Now you will read his "subconscious signal".
Ask him to watch your finger as it moves above the cards.
Ask him to make sure he does not blink, or swallow or otherwise give you a signal as you pass over his card.
While you are moving your finger over the cards, you remind him that you will be looking at HIM to detect the subconscious signal.
Even though he thinks he remained completely poker faced, you announce that you were able to catch the subconscious movement he made.
And then you CORRECTLY name his card!

The excitement is just beginning!
Next, you ask your spectator to cut into the remaining cards.
Again, he peeks at the card he cut to, and again he shuffles the portion of the deck he is holding.
This time, you ask him to look at each card, one at a time, and lay the card face down on the table.
Remind him that you will be looking at him to get the subconscious signal, so he should try hard not to blink or swallow or make any unusual movement when he sees his card.
When all of the cards have been laid on the table, you declare that he did, indeed, give you a signal when he passed his card.
You pick up the cards and tell him you don't know yet what the card was, but you did read his signal of WHERE the card was.
You pick through the cards and separate a single card, keeping it facing you.
You tell him the name of his card!
And you remind him that he randomly cut the deck and shuffled the cards, yet- BOOM! you were able to pick out the exact card he chose, because you could read his subconscious signal.

And there's more!
You take the remaining cards, and ribbon spread them on the table.
You allow the spectator to slide one of the cards out of the spread, and secretly look at it.
This time, you are going to watch for his subconscious signal as you name the four suits and the thirteen values that make up a deck of cards.
First you name the four suits, looking intently at your spectator.
Next, you name all the values, one by one, from Ace through King.
AND THEN YOU NAME HIS CARD!
