BIRDLAND
Another one of my favorite pieces of jazz to play.
BIRDLAND was written by Joe Zawinul of the group Weather Report, as a tribute to the legendary Harlem nightclub that featured so many of the jazz greats- Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Miles Davis, to name a few.
Zawinul has stated that the song was also named in honor of the legendary musician after whom the club was named, Charlie Parker, the 'Bird' himself.
Manhattan Transfer won a Grammy in 1977 for their recording of BIRDLAND.
