Invisibility Shield

The wonderful magic of science!
Here is a terrific example of a piece of scientific equipment that's been made into a magic trick!

Hold this lens in front of an object (say, a black stick pen resting on top of your hand) and the lens acts as an invisibility shield, making the pen seem to vanish, though your hand stays in full view!

The special lens refracts light and makes objects "invisible".
Just place an ordinary black stick pen across your fingers.
Then place the lens WIDTHWISE on top of your fingers.
You can see your fingers and the pen through the lens.
Then simply move the lens to that it is sitting LENGTHWISE on your fingers.
The pen seems to VANISH, but you can see all of your fingers!

The plastic lens is called a LENTICULAR LENS.
Basically, the plastic sheet has been molded with a series of tiny cylindrical 3-D lines designed so that when you view an object through the sheet from slightly different angles, different parts of the image underneath are shown or hidden.

We purchased the remaining stock of these lenses when one of our magic suppliers recently went out of business.
These were always sold without instructions.
They were marketed as replacement lenses for the Lubors Lens magic trick, but you can certainly use the lens by itself, as shown in the video above.
