INSTANT INSANITY is one of the many names of a very popular puzzle that should be familiar to most magicians and their spectators. It comprises of four cubes with different coloured spots on each side. The object of the puzzle is to arrange the four cubes in a column or stack, so that all four of the colors show along each side of the column. At first appearance, this seems to be a simple task, but a few trials will convince you that it is more difficult than you thought!
Sam Dalal, creator of this particular version of Instant Insanity, notes:There are 3,981,312 different ways to arrange these four cubes in a column.Only ONE in 331,776 different random combinations will produce the correct result. So out of a total of nearly FOUR MILLION ways the cubes can be arranged, there are only 24 correct ways to stack the cubes.
SAM DALAL: Sam Dalal is one of the most prolific magic inventors, innovators and authors in the magic business. He first became interested in magic in his pre-teens, and paid for an engineering degree with magic performances. Unaware of other magic dealers in those years, he "created" and made most of the magic props he used by merely looking at the illustrations in a Douglas Magicland Catalog. Some of these were just "reinventing the wheel", but some were original, as he found out years later. Eventually, he started contributing his "ideas" to various magic magazines, like the Magigram, New Pentagram, Abra, and several others. Inspired by the Jinx, he started his own magic monthlies - Swami and subsequently Mantra which ran for over 5 years till 1975. It had contributions from some of the best magical creators of the period. Most uniquely, it also had descriptions of Indian fakir magic (sideshow magic) that makes these publications highly collectible today. Around the same time he phased out of performing, he started his own magic manufacturing business (Funtime Innovations). Today this business is still thriving. To date, his company has made more than 2000 varieties of props for Magicians.
