The difference between this half dollar and the later Kennedy half dollars (those minted after 1970) is that these pre-1970 coins actually have 40% silver content.
The newer coins have NO silver content whatsoever.
The more silver in a coin, the more "ring" sound the coin has when tapped or clicked.
So these 40% silver coins sound really nice when used in your routines!
The coins also polish up really well because of the silver finish on the outside of the coin!
In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson announced plans to completely eliminate silver from U.S. quarters and dimes, and to reduce the silver content in the Kennedy Half Dollars to 40%. The inner layer of these new 40% silver half dollars contained 79% copper and 21% silver, while the outside was clad with 80% silver and 20% copper.
Thus, in total, the coin consists of 40% silver.
A 40% silver half dollar weighs around 11.5 grams.
These coins were minted between 1965 and 1970.
Starting in 1971, the Kennedy half dollars were minted in the same copper-nickel composition as quarters and dimes, and are still made that way today.
