In the mid-1990s, some of the big casinos in Las Vegas issued a series of collector chips depicting various entertainers who had performed in their showrooms.The chips were available for $5, the actual gambling value of the chip.It was a marketing idea that banked on the fact that people would buy the chips to collect them, not to spend them.However, as we all know, the casino would probably still make out if the buyer gambled with the chip!
The Collectors Series featured more than 20 entertainers, including Englebert Humperdinck, George Carlin and the Bally Showgirls.But the magic-themed ones are the most valuable today.We obtained these magic related chips from the collection of a retired Las Vegas performer.The collection included Penn & Teller, Copperfield, Rick Thomas, Blackstone and Lance Burton.
