The Floating Light Bulb is a 1981 Broadway play by Woody Allen. Semi-autobiographical, it focuses on a lower middle class family living in Canarsie, Brooklyn, New York City, in 1945.One of the five characters is Paul, a shy boy obsessed with magic tricks, and based on Woody Allen himself as a boy.
In the play, Paul performs a number of magic effects, including the Floating Lightbulb, Billiard Balls, Linking Rings, Appearing Cane, playing cards, silk handkerchiefs, Wonder Silk Box, Cut and Restored Rope, Change Bag, Cut and Restored Necktie, Electric Deck, Egg Bag, Milk Pitcher, Lota Vase, Multiplying Bottles, Multiplying Cigarettes and Cane To Flowers.
The play premiered on Broadway at the Vivian Beaumont Theater in Lincoln Center on April 27, 1981 and ran for 62 performances.Jack Weston was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor In a Play.Brian Backer, who played the Woody Allen character, won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor In a Play.And the magical Director was Robert Aberdeen, who continues to perform in New York City.
