"It is with great pleasure we announce the United States Postal Service decision to issue a commemorative stamp honoring Harry Houdini. The formal unveiling is expected to be held at the 100th anniversary of the Society of
American Magicians (SAM) Centennial in New York City next July 2002. Houdini was President of SAM for 9 years until his untimely death in 1926.
The Houdini family has been in communication with the Stamp Development
office of the US Postal Service since Fall of 2000.
The 37 cent stamp is a beautiful lithograph of Houdini. It will be
shown to the public for the first time in late October 2001, as part of National Stamp Collecting Month.
On
behalf of the entire Houdini family, we would like to publicly thank the magic community for their tremendous
support and enthusiasm which helped this stamp become a reality. In addition, we would like to give special
thanks to Thomas D. Gentile for his personal efforts promoting the stamp. Mr. Gentile began advocating for a
Houdini stamp several years ago, we feel his efforts were instrumental in getting the stamp approved. Houdini
would certainly be honored and proud as we all are!"
Magically Yours,
Marie H. Blood, Houdini's Niece
Jeff Blood, Grand Nephew of Houdini
