This is how a thumb tip
should fit on your thumb. The base of the thumb tip sits on your knuckle. It does
not fit over your knuckle. In this photo, the magician's own real thumb ends at the
thumb tip's knuckle, leaving room in the top of the thumb tip for whatever you want to vanish or produce. Here is the size chart for the thumb tips we
carry (appears below). |
 |
| Q:
Does a thumb tip have to match your skin tone in color? |
| A: Absolutely not. Properly used,
the thumb tip is not noticed by the spectator, no matter
what color it is. Some magicians use a thumb tip painted a
bright orange or blue, or studded with rhinestones, to prove
that it's the way the tip is handled, not the color, that
successfully camouflages the tip from the spectator's view.
And that's a good thing, because it would be impossible to
satisfactorily match the wide spectrum of skin tones on
people. Even African-American and darker Latin magicians can use the regular thumb tips, as it is the technique and not the color that is important.

 |
| Q:
Can a thumb tip be made larger or smaller? |
| A: It is
best to find the tip that fits you. If your thumb is
larger than 4" in circumference, or smaller
than 2 1/2" in circumference, the thumb tip is
not the trick for you. Questions about the best fit, please contact
us. |
 |
| Q:
Will using the thumb tip for vanishing lit
cigarettes melt the end of the tip? |
| A: The
end of the thumb tip will not melt, but it may
discolor after a while from the color of the ashes.
For most magicians, the discoloration is not
bothersome. To remove or lessen the discoloration,
you can try soaking the thumb tip in a solution of
1/2 water and 1/2 chlorine bleach for about 1 hour.
Or, you can just replace the thumb tip with a new
one if the discoloration bothers you. |

HOW
TO MEASURE YOUR THUMB |
 |
| Wrap a piece of string around your thumb
once, just above your knuckle (look at the photo on this
page, and wrap the string at the same place where the
base of the thumb tip rests above the knuckle on this
magician's thumb). Lay on end of the string on your
thumb, and wrap the string around one time. Mark the
string where it meets the end; this is the
circumference, or the measurement around your finger.
Lay the string on a ruler and measure from the end of
the string to the mark you made on the string to get the
circumference measurement. Now look at the chart above
to find the tip that best fits your thumb. |
