Casino tables are usually covered in green felt. Why? Illegal card games were popularly played in the back rooms of legal pool halls, on a spare pool table. Pool tables were covered in green felt, making for a smooth- and safe- playing surface. The green felt could be marked with chalk for tallying the bets, and the chalk could be wiped away in an instant in the case of a police raid. When legal gambling casinos were built, they kept the tradition of the green color.
