Paul
Fleming Gemmill worked as both "Paul Gemmill" and
"Paul Fleming". At times, he even acted as his own agent,
using the other name. He started his career with his own show in 1906 on
the Chautauqua circuit,
but soon became assistant first to Eugene
Laurant (from 1909 to 1910) and then to Karl
Germain (from 1910 to 1914). While working for Germain, he again
launched his own stage career, first appearing as "Karl Germain"
in a second show put out by the real Germain on the Chautauqua
circuit, and then on his own.
His professional stage career was
relatively shortlived, though, and he became a respected professor of economics at
Swarthmore College, though he still performed onstage from time to time.
He wrote
the Paul Fleming Book Reviews, a series of reviews of magic
books.
His brother, Walker Fleming, was also a
professional magician.
