A traveling magician,

Laurant in Denver Colorado in the 1880s. Bernier shared the
secrets of handcuff escapes with the young boy, as well as a number
of other clever stage tricks. When Bernier left Denver with an
acting troupe, he sold his trunk of effects to Laurant, who then
went onstage as "Eugene, the Boy Magician".
