Gustav Alberti is the magician credited with inventing the Ambitious Card routine. He also may have been the first to perform the Rising Card trick by placing the cards in a glass tumbler held in his hand.
He was performing in France at least from 1860 to 1875.
Robert-Houdin mentioned Alberti in one of his journals, as he was apparently very impressed with Alberti's card handling skills.
